Isn’t that what we are always wondering? Do they? Do you….really love me? Is it just me that struggles with this? I feel like maybe I am not alone in this insidious curiosity.
I recently ran across a passage from the Apostle Paul that addresses this very issue. Galatians 1:10 says the following:
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Whoa. Wait? Really? Are those my options: Seeking to be a servant of Christ, or seeking to please people? Ouch.
In Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, he fights against the early church and the Apostle Peter’s compromise. Peter denied his vision in Acts 10; that Jesus’ saving grace was extended to the Gentiles without religious entrance requirements attached.
Paul was infuriated that Peter did not defend Jesus’ gift of free induction into God’s family. When faced with disapproval from his community, Paul communicates that Peter was not still operating as a “servant of Christ”.
